Today we went to see the X-Files movie. My sister and niece were big fans of the TV show. BIG fans. They were as excited about this movie as I was about Mamma Mia.
I sat with my eyes staring at my lap for most of the last 20 minutes of the movie. And now I am just kicking myself for not walking out. It was PG-13 and I am regretful that my 15 year old saw it. I should have taken him out. I am regretful that I saw it!
I just don't get it. The definition of "entertainment" has changed so much in the past few years. Why is torture, a total disregard for human life and dismemberment entertainment? Why is it that the envelope has been blown apart - there is no envelope anymore to push?
I watched Ebert and Roeper today for their review of the movie before going. Neither Roeper or the guest critic mentioned the plot points that contained the offensive material. No warning that this movie is a departure from the usual alien themes and goes into a whole new realm - a realm that some people may be offended or grossed out by. Not a word. Just business as usual. Split decision - one liked it, one didn't.
I want my money back. I want the images I did see before looking down out of my brain. And Jarrett wants the 30 minutes of his life back that he had to listen to me go off about how this is Not OK and that we should have left. And how there comes a time when you have to stand up and say No More and leave. And the next time, should there ever be a next time, we will do exactly that.
X-Files - I vote NO.
