Questions

Where does this end?

Thursday Steff and I went to do some shopping. Steff drove and needed gas. When she filled up her minivan, the total was $60.00. This was the line in the sand for her. She is still talking about $60 for a tank of gas. And the questions that come from that.
  • Where does this end?
  • What the hell is going on in this world?
  • Who is profiting so enormously, so record breakingly from the dramatic jump in gas prices?
  • Who is looking the other way to allow this to happen?
  • What are we being distracted by instead?
  • And the most helpless question of all - what can we do as individuals about this?

What do you know about Dubai? That tiny little country in the United Arab Emirates that is experiencing a growth explosion of biblical proportions?

Dubai today (and this is just one little section - it is impossible to get a real shot of all that is going on there because it is so enormous and unimaginable)

This is what it looked like 17 years ago.
Hmmmm...

I have started keeping an Economic Indicators notebook. Each month, I jot down anecdotal indicators in my daily life: the price of gas each week, the price of groceries, interesting facts I get from articles on the economy. I have just started June, which is only my second month. But even so - already there have been interesting trends.
*
The news is reporting that grocery prices are up 9% over last year. NINE percent. I want to know where they are shopping because I want to get their ads. I found a 50% increase in one week in Shredded Mini Wheats. The bread I buy jumped 35% in one week. Yogurt went up 20% in one week. In one month, lemons went from 2/$1.00 to .99 each - that is a 100% increase. Nine percent? Who are you trying to fool?
*
And we all know the historic leaps that gas is taking every week.
*
I have to ask - what is really going on? Can the truth be found? And why, oh why, is the truth so hard to ferret out, to piece together, and then to believe?
*
What do you think? What are you seeing? I would love to know.

Great post! It seems like the increase in gas is driving up the cost of everything! I just heard on the news that the airlines are thinking of weighing customers to determine the price of their tickets because of the cost of fuel to fly (the heavier the cargo, the more fuel is being used). I can't friggin' believe that!!! I guess I won't be flying anywhere...I refuse to even let my hubby know how much I weigh! Things are really bad right now!! It's horrible!

Its costs $100 for me to fill up our Durango -- so our other car is a Toyota Yaris, 40 mpg, and $40 to fill...I don't drive much during the day, so it balances out, and we rarely take the truck out...I read today that someone with a Hummer was paying $700 a week to get to work! We got smaller cars after the 1970's gas crisis, but then discovered the SUV...I can't believe CORN is 4 for $2, this time last year, you got 12 or 18 for $2...they are trying to make that the alternative source for fuel -- so meanwhile its less available for people who want to EAT it, and they are growing less WHEAT in order to accommodate the corn fields...so that's driving everything else up...its such a delicate balance, our environment...When will it end!??!?!
