Prices idle drivers

Meanwhile, high gas prices have prompted many Americans to cut back on the amount of driving they do.

The Federal Highway Administration said Thursday it estimates that Americans drove 1.4 billion fewer miles on public roads in April. That's a decline of 1.8% compared to April 2007 and is the sixth consecutive month that drivers have cut back.

So far this year, the agency estimates that drivers have traveled 20 billion fewer miles than in previous years.

Jarrett's photography camp is over. That means we can cut back our driving even more. To reduce the amount of impact from camp, I drove Jarrett each morning one town over and stayed in that town until time to pick him up. It was not always easy to find something to do for 8 days but I managed to find something even if it was visiting the campus library. The hot weather reduced my options. No hanging out outside.

So now it is all about finding things to do with a teenage boy in town and at home. Hello, Challenge.

The conclusion I came to yesterday was that maybe people will realize what amazing things are in their backyard this year when they aren't flying or going on really long trips! I went an hour north from our house, and we saw the most amazing farm/dairy country! There are lots of day trip, not that expensive things to do!

Sara-
I agree with you. "Staycations" are definitely the answer. Staying right around home and discovering what has been in your backyard all along.

I like that, Sandi! "Staycations." LOL.

I've never actually been on a real vacation, mostly because I love to stay home.

The veracity of the report is something I question because it's based on fuel consumption rather than surveys. Here in MN, many people have both an SUV and a car, and their cars are getting pulled out more often. People are also selling their SUVS like crazy.

It would be something, I think, if more Americans actually boycotted excess fuel in order to send a message to companies like Exxon, who TWICE this year alone, reported the LARGEST EARNINGS EVER for any company.

May be the best thing in the long run for the climate. Seems the proper way to minimize our carbon footprint. AnnieH

Jane - Yes, Exxon/Mobil are robber barons. Our only gas card is E/M but we are no longer using it for that reason. And you may be entirely right about the report being inaccurate. I figure if you double what the news reports you are about right. Not that the media is deceptive or complicit - HA.

Annie-I agree that there can be some wonderful long term effects of a nose thumbing reduction campaign. If nothing else it makes me FEEL better.
