New direction

So, it was a tough weekend. Sometimes as a parent, you have to step up and be ready to take an issue to the limit. A balls to the wall kind of day. Luckily for me, I had just watched a couple of episodes of Nanny 911 (it comes on when I am eating lunch and is good company for me).
Nanny Stella was dealing with parents that let their 3 and 4 year olds go to bed with pacifiers and sippy cups every night. Needless to say, Stella was not having that! The first night they took the sippy cups and pacies away from the kids, they screamed till 5:45 AM. Everybody got about 2 hours sleep that night. The parents were looking for any way out about 3:00 am. Pretty sure they would have sold a kidney for earplugs and lots of booze. But Stella got right in the parents' faces and said "Are You Going to DO THIS when they are 15?!"
No, Stella but I can tell you about 15 year olds and the topics are scarier than sippy cups and pacies. So, I recalled Stella's diatribe on "doing what has to be done regardless" to heart. And then it was echoed by my sister. Jarrett needed a new direction in his life and frankly, it was our job to give it to him even if he screamed until 5:45 AM. No giving in and giving him the sippy cups! Stand your ground and make it stick.
We did. And it was ugly. And then it wasn't anymore. And I am so freakin' tired I could collapse. Teenagers are so much work. I have already done this once before and now it is time to do all of this again. And I am older and tireder...
Can I have the pacifer and a sippy cup? Please?

Thank you so much for all the support, Sandi! Sometimes an encouraging word is all that is needed.

I think you are a great parent and hope you take comfort in the fact that a) the teenage times will pass and b) one day your kids will look back knowing that you cared and were active and supportive!

Yay for that! I wish we could share a sippy cup together.
